UNICEF Awards Scholarship To 300 Girls In Gombe

Unicef has awarded scholarships to 300
girls in the state.
The United Nations International
Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF),
Gombe state coordinating unit, has given
scholarship to 300 girl children to study
in Federal College of Education (FCE),
Gombe, NAN reports.
Malam Isa Yahaya, the UNICEF
Coordinator in the state, disclosed this in
Gombe on Thursday.
He said the beneficiaries were selected
from the most remote areas of each local
government of the state. He explained
that the aim was to train them as
teachers and at the end of their studies,
deployed to primary and secondary
schools to teach.
“Most of the girls are from poor
background that is even why we did not
pick those in the local government
headquarters. We are made to
understand that poverty is the major
factor that hinders them from furthering
their education,” he said.
He said they commenced the programme
in 2014 and is going to be sustained
after the graduation of the first set after
three years.
