A
63-year-old man, Patrick Amaechi, was on Wednesday arraigned in an
Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly obtaining N5.2 million on
the pretext of securing a German visa for one Bonny Alison.
Amaechi, 63, who resides at No. 13, Zaechus Lane, Ajegungle, Lagos, was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence.
He, however, denied committing the offences levelled against him.
But the prosecutor, ASP Soji Ojaokomo, said that the accused committed the offences on April 15, at his residence.
He said that Amaechi collected the N5.2 million from the complainant with a promise to secure a German visa for her.
“Instead of securing the German visa for Allison, the accused converted the money to his personal use,’’ Ojaokomo said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 312 prescribes a 15-year jail term for obtaining money under false pretence, while Section 409 stipulates two years imprisonment for conspiracy.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till June 17 for mention.(NAN)
