Senate Presidency: Group Urges Senators-Elect To Support Lawan

Ahmed-LawanThe South-East chapter of the National Coalition for Good Governance, on Wednesday, asked the All Progressives Congress and the senators-elect to elect Senator Ahmed Lawan as the Senate President.
The group, in a statement signed by its South-East Coordinator, Eze Odiri, said Lawan is the most competent to occupy the office.
“Nigeria needs a visionary and purposeful National Assembly and we believe that Lawan will actualise this dream,” the group said.
It argued that having served in the House of Representatives and the Senate, Lawan has the best experience required for the office of the President of Senate.
The group appealed to the senators-elect to consider Lawan’s leadership of committees on agriculture, education and public accounts in the National Assembly.
The statement read in part, “Having scored high in the areas of consistency, character and competence, we strongly appeal to the APC and the senators-elect to please do the needful for the sake of posterity by electing unanimously, distinguished Senator Ahmed Lawan as the President of the Senate.
“Since the return to democratic governance in1999, Lawan has consistently been in the National Assembly. He was in the House of Representatives from 1999-2003, 2003-2007 and has been in the Senate since 2007.
“This outstanding record qualifies him for the office of the President of the Senate in an administration that has promised to fight corruption.
“His consistency and character have been tested through the outstanding manner he has managed all the committees he has chaired since entering the National Assembly.”
