The Federal Government has given the
Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) approval for installation of
new Navigational Aids (NAVAIDS) in six airports across the country.
NAMA said that the approval given by the Federal Government is part of efforts to ensure safety and security at Nigerian airports.
This is just as the agency disclosed that it has taken over the provision of air navigation services at Kebbi, Dutse, Bonny Island aerodrome, Forcados Aerodrome and Bauchi airports while the federal government has cleared the debt on the TRACON support services owed Thales of France ,contractor that handled the project.
The Managing Director of NAMA, Engr. Abdulsalam Ibrahim made this known in a media chat at the agency’s headquarters at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.
He explained that the installations will not only boost flight operations in the country but that it would create better, improved and safety of airspace.
Abdulsalam further said that NAMA after replacing the navigational aids in these six airports, the functional ones from the six airports will be moved to other airports to enhance the operations of the agency.
According to him, “What we are looking at is to bring our system up. The one that will be removed will be taken to a station that does not have something that is working well” For example, the one that is taken from Lagos can be used in another station for better performance. Though government has approved for six airports but what we are doing is to make it appear as if we are replacing 12 airports. At the end of the day, what we are going to be impacting is not just on the six airports but all the other airports”.
“The navigational aids in Lagos is working very well and by the time we take it out and put in a new one, the one that is there will be taking to another station that is not working well” Abdulsalam added.
Abdulsalam also disclosed that NAMA has signed a contract with Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques (SITA) for the provision of facilities that will enhance communication between pilots and Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) through SMS known as Controller–Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) and that it will commence operations next month.
The NAMA boss also disclosed that the agency has another alternative to voice communication that is expected to tackle issues where voice network is not too good in the country and also to cover the oceanic region like Lagos and Niger Delta.
He stated that the module-S Data link was in advance stage, adding that it will soon be activated to provide information to the aircraft from the ATC at the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON).
On multi-lateration, the agency’s boss, said that NAMA is in advanced stage of deploying multi-lateration in the gulf of Guinea after survey and discussion and that it was waiting for approval to deploy it to ensure safer operations.
